Advent & Christmas 2018 at City Road Chapel

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, but before the babe comes in the manger there is a lot of preparation to be done!

The season of Advent is the time in the life of the church in which we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Jesus . . . both as a babe in the manger and in his ultimate return for all of us.  In the Christian tradition, the first Sunday of Advent (Dec. 2, 2018) represents the beginning of a new year in the Christian calendar. The word “Advent” comes from a Latin word meaning “the coming,” and this is a time for us to reflect on Christ’s coming to us in a special way. This year, City Road Chapel will be offering several opportunities for preparing for Christ’s coming.

2018 Advent Devotional Guide
Surprises Along the Way

For the past several years we have partnered with our friends at the Society of St. Andrew to use their Advent devotional guide for our own study and reflection. These devotional guides are offered free of charge and may be picked up in the Welcome Center. This is a great way of joining together in a common time of study about Christ’s coming into the world.

The Days Are Coming:
Reflecting on the Prophetic Word

On Wednesday nights in Advent (with the exception of Dec. 12) at 6 p.m., we will gather in the City Road Chapel Welcome Center for our weekly Vespers time of prayer and study, focusing on passages from the prophets regarding the coming of Christ. Each week’s gathering includes communion.

Serving Sunday
Dec. 23, 2018

On the 4th Sunday of each month, the people of City Road Chapel UMC offer expressions of God’s love through our Feed the Need and Feast Community Meal projects. Given the focus during Advent on gifting others, this is a special time to support our neighbors by providing emergency food bags for those in need, and hosting a free community dinner and entertainment that evening. We want to encourage all to think about helping out on this special Service Sunday. Come help stuff food bags at 11 a.m. in the Welcome Center, and/or set up and serve at the Community Meal at 4 p.m. in the Gym.
