Names for the Messiah Advent Study

Advent, the season of preparation for Christmas, begins on November 29, and to help our preparation for the celebration of Christ’s coming into the world, Pastor Jay Voorhees will be leading a study using Walter Brueggemann’s Names for the Messiah to guide us.

This weekly study will be held on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. beginning December 2, 2020 via Zoom video and telephone. Each week on the four Wednesdays before Christmas, we will be looking at the four royal titles ascribed to Jesus from Isaiah 9:6 — Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

Walter Brueggemann is William Marcellus McPheeters Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, he is the author of dozens of books, including Sabbath as Resistance; Journey to the Common Good; Introduction to the Old Testament, Second Edition; Mandate to Difference; and From Whom No Secrets Are Hid.

We encourage you to pick up a copy of the book to guide you in your study. You can order via Amazon either as a paperback or on Kindle. Click here to go the Amazon page to purchase the book.

We will also be posting study questions for your thoughts and reflections. You will be able to find these at https://cityroadchapel.org/advent.
